Lumi's Birdhouse

An interactive birdhouse with light and sound designed and built as a baby gift for a forest themed nursery. The original brief started out as a joke about "a white noise machine with leaf projections. You know, for the nursery".

Birdhouse from front at daytime

The birdhouse acts as a night light and has several light-up features. The central piece is of course the edge-lit acrylic owl which you can turn on and off separately.
The owl, the windows, and the indicator light were cut from 3mm acrylic. By engraving the owl using multiple layers spaced slightly apart, it creates a subtle depth effect.

The side windows light up with a soft warm white glow and can be dimmed with a separate knob to provide a suble warm glow. The silhouettes are cut using a vinyl cutter and stuck on the backside of opal 3mm acrylic.

To distribute the light effectively across the window surfaces — one LED has to do the work — light boxes were printed using a 3D printer. These were later lined with aluminum tape to help light distribution.

The simple moon projector protrudes from a dormer in the roof and is also able to be switched on and off with a knob on the front.
The projector is a simple, ready-made accessory that runs on USB power. A USB port is mounted in the roof of the birdhouse. The projections are interchangeable. The projections are interchangable by swapping the insert.

The wooden parts were laser-cut from 3mm birch plywood. Afterward, I stained them with alcohol ink, a fast-drying but strong coloring agent that does not fade when exposed to sunlight. Then, the panels were sanded and finished with a satin lacquer.

The audio system in the bottom of the birdhouse visible with the magnetic latch base flipped down

Contained within the bottom of the birdhouse is an audio player with speakers to play 'white noise' like forest sounds. The audio player supports Bluetooth streaming as well, and is controllable by the central volume knob, or by remote control. The infrared receiver is conveniently placed behind the transparent acrylic of the owl.

The latch stays put with magnets. Allowing you to flip it down easily when the birdhouse hangs on the wall.
The plate to which the audio player, speakers, and magnets for the flap are attached was 3D printed from matte black PLA
